Momma Does Movies!

The very first moment I sat in a movie theater as a child, I was entranced & mesmerized by the whole experience. The lights darkened... the red velvet curtains slowly opened... the music swelled & I was magically taken away into other worlds. Worlds filled with Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, Alan Ladd & John Wayne in gritty westerns; Jane Powell, Doris Day, Ann Blythe, Marge Champion, Gene Kelly & Fred Astair singing & dancing... Cary Grant, Hepburn, Tracy, Gable, Davis, Taylor, Burton, Bogie, Rock Hudson, Lana, Susan Hayward, Natalie, Newman... just to name of few of the hundreds of actors that took me to places beyond my imagination to experience so many emotions in so many places... drama, love stories, epics, mysteries, horror, comedy, tears & laughter... big stories & small stories & everything in between. Every Saturday I would go & escape for hours 'n hours with my friends up on the giant screen. I would keep scrapbooks on all the movies I had seen & the actors I adored. They all became my imaginary family. The movies were my friends, my lovers, my therapy & my escapes . How I ached to be Natalie Wood or Jane Powell. My first job @ 15yrs was a movie lover's dream... I became an usherette! Good grief... free movies & getting paid too! 'Course there was that darn red wool uniform with the gold braid 'n epaulets... the standing at attention, arms behind the back 12" from the marble posts when not walking the aisles flashlight in hand to quiet the noisy patrons or nab the sweaty, panting neckers & not to forget the lengthy kiddie Saturday matinees, lost screaming toddlers & cleaning up after vomiting children who had stuffed down too much candy corn or the sneaky theatre owner who tried to grab & fondle at every opportunity. Didn't matter, I was in movie heaven. After all this time, my love for film has never lessened & I still get mesmerized by the countless stories & my new friends on the silver screen. I was always taught to only write about what I know & love. Da Hunk & I always critique & discuss ad naseum the latest screen offerings we've viewed, so this opinionated momma's jumpin on the movie critic soapbox.

The Cat's Meow4 Bags!

Directed by Peter Bogdanovich   Written by Steven Peros

Starring: Edward Herrmann, Eddie Izzard, Kirsten Dunst, Cary Elwes, Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Tilly, Claudia Harrison, Ronan Vibert, Victor Slezak, Claudie Blakley, Chiara Schoras, Ingrid Lacey

In The Cat's Meow, Peter Bogdanovich takes on a murder and cover-up that may or may not have happened aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht Oneida in the middle of the Roaring Twenties. The ensemble acting is quite good. Dunst captures a gaiety that defines the era, though she doesn't share much chemistry with Hermann, who plays Hearst as a completely whipped, belligerent baby with a gun. Dunst and Izzard play a wonderfully flirtatious cat-and-mouse game and Izzard is especially fun to watch as a cocky womanizer. And as the doomed Ince, Cary Elwes brings his usual sophistication that audiences should see more often. Jennifer Tilly is hilarious as the girl who's not totally welcome at the party but insists on joining in all the same. This film cruises down the muddied waters of a raunchy era whose excesses still resonate today. I certainly enjoyed this cinematic boat ride.

LOTR: The Fellowship Of The Ring4 Bags!

Directed by Peter Jackson  Written by Frances Walsh
Adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy

Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Orlando Bloom, Dominic Monaghan, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Ian Holm, Andy Serkis

Director Peter Jackson has fashioned a faithful and visually spectacular adaptation of the first volume in Tolkien's trilogy, The Fellowship Of The Ring. And this darkly engrossing three-hour morality play, about a band of hobbits, elves, dwarves and men who try to destroy a magic ring that could bring down the world remains pretty faithful to the text, feel, and character of the novel of the struggle for Middle Earth. Jackson's attention to detail and the state of the art special effects make a world like none other seem to magically come alive before our very eyes. A truly creative look at the work of Tolkien. Kudos to Peter Jackson who has taken a fine cast, beautiful scenery and soundtrack, meticulous costuming and set design, great cinematography and a fabulous story and melded it into a wonderful movie. I look forward to the next films in the trilogy ... Two Towers and The Return of the King.
